52:1 George Adamson

Well, I am a day (or 2!) later than I meant to be with this post. But nevertheless, my first “52 Ancestors in 52 Weeks” post. George Adamson. George is my great-great-grandfather and one of my “immigrant ancestors.” He immigrated in 1851 from Yorkshire, England. He settled briefly in Ohio (where family lore reports he “ran” a pub) where he married my great-great-grandmother, Mary Hunter. As referenced in my first blog post, there is a circular relationship involving the Adamsons and Hunters. Mary is the niece of George’s brother-in-law. About 2 years after their marriage, they moved on to Indiana. Sadly, Mary died in May 1870 and George died less than a year later in January 1871, leaving 6 children.

The following contains information from a narrative report generated in my genealogy program, RootsMagic. Have a look.

George Adamson was born on 7 Jul 1826 in Wilton, Yorkshire, England, United Kingdom.[1],[2] He was baptized on 9 Jul 1826 in Ellerburn (parish), Yorkshire, England, United Kingdom.[3] image transcription: 09 July 1826; George, son of George and Elizabeth Adamson, (abode) Wilton, (occupation) Farmer, by R. B. Scholefield, Offg Minister.

He lived in Wilton, Yorkshire, England, United Kingdom in the 1841 census, in the household of Samuel Baker, a farmer.[4] image transcription: township of Wilton, household of Samuel Baker; Geo Adamson, male, age 15, M.S. (male servant), born Y(orkshire).

George emigrated from Yorkshire, England (departing from Liverpool) aboard the Boadicea in Mar 1851.[5] He arrived on 15 Apr 1851 in New York City.[6],[7] image transcription: ship “Boadicea” arrived 15 April 1851 at New York (pg 7, lines 8-11); George Adamson, 24; Elizabeth Adamson, 58 (mother of George); Thomas Wardell, 28; Anne Wardell, 22. comments: Anne Wardell is the younger sister of George Adamson.

George Adamson and Mary Hunter obtained a marriage license on 15 Sep 1855 in Circleville, Pickaway, Ohio, United States.[8] They were married on 22 Sep 1855 in Pickaway, Ohio, United States.[9]

George and Mary moved from Ohio to Indiana in 1857. George and Mary’s oldest daughter, Anna Elizabeth, was born in Ohio in 1856; second daughter, Sarah Jane, was born in Indiana in early 1858.

He lived in Washington Township, Greene, Indiana, United States in the 1860 census.[10] image transcription: George Adams [Adamson], 33, born England; Mary, 25, born England; Anne E., 4, born Ohio; Sarah J., 2, born Indiana; George, 1/12 (1 month), born Indiana; Joseph Hunter, 12, born England; Elisabeth Adamson, 67, born England. comments:  Joseph Hunter is the younger brother of Mary. Elisabeth is the mother of George.

He lived in Stafford Township, Greene, Indiana, United States in the 1870 census.[11] image transcription: George Adams [Adamson], Age 44, M, W, Farmer, born England; Elizabeth, 14, born Ohio; Sarah J, 12, born Indiana; George, 10, born Indiana; John, 8, born Indiana; Mary, 6, born Indiana; William, 3, born Indiana.

George died on 9 Jan 1871 at the age of 44 in Marco, Greene, Indiana, United States.[12],[13] He was buried at Marco Cemetery in Marco, Greene, Indiana, United States.[14],[15] He does have a memorial on the Find a Grave website. The memorial ID is 16969656.[16]

So, not too bad an outline. But it is just a beginning. In a separate, upcoming post, we’ll discuss sources I have yet to consult. In the meantime, I am including my citations for the above!

  1. Hi,
I wanted to contact you but found that this comment area was the only way possible.
Matthew Dodgson who married Sarah Thorpe is my ggg grandfather. Matthew is a son of John Dodgson and Mary Jackson so is also a brother of Elizabeth Dodgson who married Christopher Lowther and after he died married George Adamson.
Since you descend from George, the son of George and Elizabeth, therefore we are related even if distant cousins.
I presently live in London, Ontario, Canada about 30 miles from the area where Matthew Dodgson and Sarah Thorpe Dodgson came to when they first settled in Oxford County in Ontario.
At the present time I have 1877 descendants of Matthew and Sarah Dodgson with the majority living or having lived in Canada.
I have also researched further back to the gg grandparents of the generation that Elizabeth Dodgson belonged to.
I was raised about two miles from where Matthew and Sarah settled living with the one daughter and son-in- law. By coincidence that son-in-law was Robert Adamson.

I can not find a tombstone for them but have a suspicion the they are buried in the same plot as their daughter and son-in-law.

  2. Hi,
After doing more calculating, I believe that we would be 5th cousins since Matthew’s son John is my gg grandfather and you said that George Adamson , Elizabeth’s son, is your gg grandfather.

Hoping that you contact me at [redacted].
