Marriage Notes (George Adamson)
Family lore passed down gave her name as Elizabeth Dotchen, pronounced "doe chin" (as written down in notes by Aunt Mary) and that she had been a nurse to George's sister, Ann Adamson Sunley. Upon Ann's death, George and Elizabeth married. They had 3 children, 2 surviving beyond infancy. George was many years older than Elizabeth and after his death the family emigrated to the U.S.
For many years we were unable to find any trace of an "Elizabeth Dotchen" marrying George Adamson. However, in 2015, we found the marriage record of George Adamson marrying Elizabeth Lowther. Further research found that Elizabeth Lowther was a widow and still further research determined that Elizabeth Dodgson married a Christopher Lowther in 1814. Christopher Lowther then died in 1816, leaving Elizabeth Dodgson Lowther a widow. And solving the mystery of Elizabeth "Dotchen".
In further records, Dodgson can have many spellings and in fact, Elizabeth's own father used Dotchen on more than one occasion.
