William Wardell was baptized on 31 July 1831 in the Parish of Wykeham in Yorkshire, England. He is the son of Francis Wardell and Mary Huddleston Wardell. He is the youngest child and his father Francis died in January 1832.
At least 4 siblings and a cousin all came to Pickaway County. An older brother Joseph appears to have been the first (he married Mary Rose in Pickaway County in 1838). In 1851, another brother, Thomas Wardell followed. In 1853, 2 sisters (Elizabeth Wardell Hunter and Hannah Wardell Ecclefield) and their families also immigrated along with a cousin, John Wardell.
